The history of Karate International... Karate International was formed in 1972 inspired by the word "ki". Karate International opened its first dojo in 1974 in Raleigh, NC. Since then KI has grown to more than 6 dojos throughout North Carolina. KI has almost 50 years of history. the greatness in Karate International lies in the unity of its students and leaders. KI has promoted over 1000 black belts, 5 Grand Masters (9th degree and 10th degree black belts), over 20 Master Instructors (6th to 8th degree black belts) and trained over 10,000 students. The history of our style... Our Karate is a blend of martial arts styles creating the non-traditional American Karate System. Our
style of karate is Sanshinkai karate. This style was developed by Jan
Wellendorf, a martial arts instructor, author, business manager,
tournament competitor, and 10th degree Black Belt. He began his martial
arts study in 1963. He studied Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Okinawan
Karate. He is the retired president of the Karate International
organization. Out
of his training grew Sanshinkai Karate. Sanshinkai means the “three
power society”, the three powers of mind, body, and spirit. Sanshinkai
is not so much a style of martial arts as it is a “way” or method that
can be used to enhance any fighting system. The heart of
Sanshinkai teaching is belief that all great techniques contain a
balance of mental, physical, and spiritual forces. Each of these forces
has three parts which progress the technique to higher levels of speed,
power, and timing. The mixture of styles we teach are American Karate, Isshinryu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Ju-jitsu, and much more.
